This 152-page hardcover book with a slipcase is part of the 3Dtotal Illustrator series. The book was successfully funded in September 2020 on Kickstarter, and officially released to the public in 2021. Since the book has been out for a while, new copies of this book can be difficult to find nowadays. Publisher 3Dtotal is still selling it from their online store.
Atey Ghailan: An Artistic Journey is beautiful and inspiring book. Atey started out with a love for playing video games, and didn’t really know what to do with his life and ended up enrolling in law school. He later interned as an office assistant at an advertising agency before discovering that making art for games can be a career. He then took it upon himself to learn and create art on his own since he was rejected by the five art schools that he applied today. And later on managed to get a job at Atomhawk art studio and today he runs his own art studio. His story is quite inspiring and there’s much to read in this book.
The book only has a few of his early artworks while the bulk comes his a-painting-a-day project for a year. The artworks are gorgeous. They are well composed and thoughtful with storytelling. I also like their are usually animals, very cute and well drawn animals, in his scenes. There’s definitely a lot of anime influence and I like that style mixed with realism and textures.
This is a fantastic artbook that I can recommend very easily. It’s book for those who like anime, concept visualisation and Pascal Campion-style art.
